Overview.

The Hiden EPIC and EPIC 1000 Series extend high-performance residual gas analysis to neutrals, radicals and positive or negative ions. Configurable mass range and soft ionization make the platform suitable for demanding UHV and XHV surface science and time-resolved experiments.

Analyze neutrals, radicals and ions in UHV and XHV research

Pole bias mid-axis potential and negative ion capability support electron attachment measurements. Source controls enable soft ionization and appearance potential mass spectrometry, while pulse ion counting provides a wide dynamic range. Mass range options extend to 5,000 amu, supporting high mass transmission and selected cluster studies.

EPIC can be factory upgraded with a Bessel-box or 45° sector-field energy filter and is compatible with Hiden plasma and SIMS probes. Signal gating to 100 ns supports time-resolved workflows. Its neutral, radical and ion capabilities extend the platform beyond routine residual gas monitoring.

Applications include

  • electron-stimulated, photon-stimulated and thermal desorption studies
  • UHV and XHV surface science
  • radical analysis
  • energy and biofuels research
  • time-resolved studies

Key Features.

  • Mass range options to 5,000 amu with 6 mm or 9 mm pole diameters extend analysis from residual gases to higher-mass species
  • Electron energy control supports soft ionization and appearance potential mass spectrometry, helping distinguish species with reduced fragmentation
  • Pulse ion counting provides a continuous seven-decade dynamic range, while an optional Faraday detector extends measurement to higher count rates
  • Signal gating with 100 ns resolution supports time-of-flight and other time-resolved studies
  • UHV-compatible shrouds, including a liquid nitrogen cooled option, help control background and contamination

Software.

Every system ships with control software. Which package suits depends on whether you are running quantitative gas analysis, evolved gas work, or building your own acquisition routines.
